Elastic IP addresses are static IPv4 addresses designed for dynamic cloud computing. Your CuriosityCloud Tenant is assigned an Elastic IP address, which is yours until you release it. With an elastic IP address, you can mask errors from one instance or software by quickly remapping the address to another instance in your account. Alternatively, you can specify the Elastic IP address in a DNS record for the domain, so that the domain points to the instance.

An Elastic IP address is a public IPv4 address, which can be accessed from the Internet. If the instance does not have a public IPv4 address, you can associate an Elastic IP address with the instance to enable communication with the Internet. For example, this allows you to connect to the instance from the local computer.

Basic Concepts of Elastic IP Addresses

Below are the basic characteristics of an Elastic IP address:

  • An Elastic IP address is static; it does not change over time.
  • An Elastic IP address is used only in a specific region and cannot be moved to another region.
  • An Elastic IP address comes from either the CuriosityCloud IPv4 address pool or a custom IPv4 address pool that you brought to your CuriosityCloud Tenant.
  • To use an Elastic IP address, first assign one to your tenant, and then associate it with your instance or a network interface.
  • When you associate an Elastic IP address with an instance, it is also associated with the instance’s primary network interface. When you associate an Elastic IP address with a network interface associated with an instance, it is also associated with the instance.
  • A detached Elastic IP address remains associated with your account until you explicitly release it. You will be charged for all Elastic IP addresses in your account, regardless of whether they are associated or disassociated from an instance.
